About The Design

The artwork centres on the iconic Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, widely known as the “Huey”, one of the most recognisable aircraft of the Vietnam War. Introduced in the late 1950s, the Huey became synonymous with helicopter warfare throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Its distinctive two-bladed rotor and unmistakable engine sound made it instantly recognisable to troops on the ground.

Australia deployed Huey helicopters to Vietnam through No. 9 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), which arrived in June 1966. Operating primarily from Vung Tau, the squadron supported the 1st Australian Task Force based at Nui Dat in Phuoc Tuy Province, flying thousands of missions in support of Australian, New Zealand and allied forces.

The helicopter depicted represents the armed “Bushranger” gunship configuration of the UH-1. These aircraft were equipped with weapons such as 7.62mm Miniguns and rocket pods, providing escort protection and close air support for troop-carrying helicopters. When soldiers were inserted into contested landing zones, Bushranger gunships would circle overhead, suppressing enemy fire and protecting troops below.

The nickname “Bushranger” became closely associated with the RAAF gunships in Vietnam, reflecting the aggressive protective role the aircraft played in combat operations.

Beneath the helicopter, the artwork features a stylised Vietnamese jungle landscape, representing the dense terrain of Phuoc Tuy Province where Australian forces conducted many operations.

The bold “Bushranger” title highlights the identity of the gunship crews, while the small inscription honours those who served and those who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.

No. 9 Squadron remained in Vietnam until November 1971, flying more than 237,000 sorties and transporting hundreds of thousands of troops, while evacuating thousands of wounded soldiers. The squadron’s Hueys became an essential part of Australian operations throughout the conflict.

This artwork pays tribute to the aircrew, ground crew and soldiers who relied on the Huey in Vietnam, recognising the courage, mateship and dedication of those who served.
