About The Design

This artwork pays tribute to the General Dynamics F-111, one of the most iconic aircraft ever flown by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Known affectionately as “The Pig,” the F-111 served as Australia’s primary long-range strike aircraft for nearly four decades and became a symbol of Australian air power.

Introduced into RAAF service in 1973, the F-111 provided Australia with a unique capability. Designed as a supersonic, long-range strike aircraft, it was capable of flying at very low altitude and high speed to penetrate enemy defences. Its distinctive variable-sweep wings allowed the aircraft to change wing position during flight, providing both stability at low speeds and exceptional performance at high speed.

The nickname “The Pig” originated from the aircraft’s ability to operate close to the ground while following terrain contours during low-level strike missions. RAAF crews often described the aircraft as “snuffling along the ground,” much like a pig rooting through soil, giving rise to the affectionate name that became widely adopted by aircrew and aviation enthusiasts.

Behind the aircraft appear the stars of the Southern Cross, one of the most recognisable constellations in the southern hemisphere and a central element of the Australian national flag. The constellation symbolises Australia itself and reinforces the aircraft’s connection to the nation it served.

The phrase “Through Adversity to the Stars” reflects the meaning of the RAAF motto “Per Ardua Ad Astra.” It represents the determination and resilience required of those who serve in military aviation, overcoming challenges through skill, discipline and perseverance.

The F-111 served the RAAF with distinction until its retirement in 2010, becoming legendary for its power, range and the dramatic “dump and burn” displays performed at Australian air shows. For generations of Australians, the roar of the F-111’s afterburners became one of the most unforgettable sounds of Australian aviation.

This artwork honours the pilots, navigators, ground crews and support personnel who operated and maintained the F-111 throughout its service, celebrating one of the most respected aircraft in Australian military aviation history.
