About the design

The Australia Remembers polo focuses on commemorating Australian Soldiers during WW1, WW2 and beyond.

An Australian soldier can be seen kneeling with his SMLE rifle and bayonet attached on the front of the polo. During the Gallipoli Campaign, SMLE No 1 MK III rifles were issued to the Australian Forces for use, alongside the Pattern 1907 Bayonet.

The soldiers in WW1 had a practical and comfortable uniform for that point in time. Where most army troops from other nationalities were required to wear a tight fitting and restrictive jacket, the Australian army opted for a looser fitting and more functional working jacket.

The Slouch Hat

This hat is symbolic of the Australian men who fought in WW1, and it continued to be worn in WW2. It was made from rabbit or wool felt with emu feathers.

The Emu Plume seen on the hats was a tradition which was carried on from the great shearers strike in Queensland in 1891, when the QLD Mounted Infantry were called out. In their free time they would ride their horses alongside the emus, and pluck a breast feather to put into their hat band.

The soldier kneeling is an act of respect to his fellow soldiers who fought at war. In the soldiers hand, he holds his rifle to the ground.

The red poppies blooming pay tribute to those who died fighting for freedom; the red colour is said to represent the blood of the fallen soldiers.

On the front pocket as well as on the left sleeve the 3rd pattern Rising Sun Badge can be seen. We are proud to have an official endorsement from the Australian Army that allows us to display the 3rd Pattern Rising Sun Badge on this polo.

This special insignia was worn by all soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Australian Imperial Force in both WW1 and WW2. This version of the rising sun badges incorporated a scroll which had the words “Australian Commonwealth Military Forces” inscribed.

In a moment of solitude, respect and sadness, there is a sign of freedom. Birds take flight in the horizon, bringing hope and a new sense of freedom. The Australian flag is imprinted on the shoulders as a commemorative symbol for the country.

The back of this polo shows a soldier saluting at a war memorial; a gesture of respect and acknowledgement. This silhouette image also shows the Australian and New Zealand flags risen to the top, symbolising the army corps.
